Ljubljana

George (Jurij) spent a month in Slovenia visiting old friends from his Fulbright days. Tomas joined him for some climbing in the Julian Alps. Ljubljana, the capitol of Slovenia, has a charming and energetic 'old town', a large university population, and very few tourists. When we were not climbing or cycling our time was spent in and around Ljubljana. We were fortunate to have an apartment to crash in - a grad student was away on vacation and allowed us to use his place. We also got to play cricket!

Climbing
The Julian Alps sweep into Slovenia from Italy and are located in Triglav National Park, just below the Austrian border. Our goal was to traverse the range from north (near the Austrian border) to south, climbing whatever looked interesting along the way. Jurij had been in the mountains back in the early '90s and played the role of guide quite well. We went light, stayed in mtn huts every night, and never used the rope - we relied on routes with 'via ferrata', iron pins and cable that had been installed during war times to aid the movement of troops. A unique experience!

Cycling
After an awesome week in the mountains, Juirij headed for the coast in Croatia for some R&R with friends and Tomas rented a touring bike and cycled around and over the Julian Alps. I carried all my stuff in panniers on the back of the bike, slept in lodging in small towns along the route, stopped to take photos or talk with people whenever I felt like it, cycled up a big pass to get over the alps, took my bike on a train to go through a tunnel under the alps, and completed a big loop back to the lake town of Bled. It was a great cultural experience and a nice bike ride!
